Mauve is a borosilicate color batch formulated to produce a grey purple when worked in the flame. This is a small batch style color, valued for the way it sits between a true purple and a neutral grey, giving you a controlled, sophisticated tone that can read as moody and atmospheric rather than loud or overly saturated.
Color batch is used as raw color material for making your own borosilicate color rod, tubing, and custom pulls. In a lampworking or scientific shop, you melt and incorporate the batch into clear borosilicate to build a consistent colored gather, then pull it down into rod or tubing, or use it for localized color sections and overlays. Greyed purples like Mauve are especially useful for contemporary palettes, shading, and layered builds where you want color presence without overpowering form, linework, or surface detail.
How it is used:
Heat a gather of clear borosilicate and introduce small amounts of the Mauve batch into the hot glass, then mix thoroughly until the color is evenly distributed. Once the color is consistent, you can pull rod for sculptural and functional work, pull stringer for fine linework and detailing, or form tubing for sleeving, blowouts, and section work. Mauve also works well in overlays and encasements when you want a softened purple tone that gains depth with thickness while maintaining a more neutral, greyed character.
