Description:
The Stainless Steel Cone Mandrel is a tapered stainless steel forming mandrel made for beadmakers who want controlled flare and clean, repeatable cone shapes. It is constructed from stainless steel with a smooth conical profile, giving you a rigid core that holds its shape through repeated heating and cooling cycles and stands up well to routine bead release removal.
This mandrel style is used in lampworking when you want to build vessel-style beads and other flared bead forms that are difficult to shape consistently on a straight mandrel. Once coated with bead release, the mandrel provides a removable core so you can wind and shape molten glass directly on the taper, then clean out the release and slide the finished bead off after proper cooling and cleaning.
How it is used:
- Apply bead release evenly over the working area and allow it to dry fully
- Warm the coated mandrel gently to reduce bead release shock and flaking
- Wind molten glass onto the tapered area and build the bead to the flare you want
- Shape with controlled heat, light marvering, and rotation to keep the taper centered
- Cool properly, then soak and remove bead release to free the finished bead
