Devardi Frit - Transparent Light Charcoal Smoke is a transparent soft glass frit used for 104 COE lampworking and beadmaking. It is made from transparent light charcoal smoke colored glass that has been crushed and screened into small particles so it can be applied to hot glass and melted in evenly. This color is used when you want a smoky gray tone that adds shading, depth, and a muted transparent overlay without turning the work fully opaque, making it especially useful for neutral palettes, soft shadowing, and toning down brighter base colors.
How it is used:
Frit is used when you want quick surface color, controlled accents, or layered effects without switching to a full rod. Heat the bead or workpiece until the surface is tacky, then roll it in frit or sprinkle frit onto the hot glass. Melt the frit in gradually to smooth the surface and reduce trapped air, then continue shaping. Transparent smoke tones are commonly used for subtle gradient shading, for adding depth under encasement, and for creating a softened, atmospheric look over light base colors. Use standard 104 COE compatibility and annealing practices when combining with other soft glass colors.
