Description:
This is a transparent gray Effetre glass rod made for soft-glass lampworking. It is manufactured as a straight rod in the 5–6mm diameter range, giving you a stable feed size for smooth heating, clean gathers, and consistent application in the flame.
Transparent gray is a useful “neutral” color in the studio. It is often chosen when you want to tone down bright palettes, add smoky depth, or create shading without switching to an opaque. It can be worked as a base color for beads and small sculptural forms, or used as a transparent overlay to soften and unify other colors while still letting light pass through the finished piece.
How it is used:
- Preheat the rod gradually in the far flame, then bring it up to working temperature.
- Build a gather and wind onto a mandrel for bead bases, spacers, and neutral backgrounds.
- Pull stringer for fine outlines, borders, and subtle linework.
- Use as an overlay to mute brighter transparents and add a smoky, dimensional look.
- Apply small gathers for dots and shading accents in layered designs.
