This is a solid, colored soft-glass rod made by Effetre Moretti in a dark periwinkle pastel tone. Soft-glass rod is the primary working form for lampworking because it allows you to heat a controlled gather in the torch and place glass accurately for beadmaking, small sculptural work, and decorative components.
A dark periwinkle pastel is a strong, opaque blue-violet that is useful when you want solid coverage and clean edges in your design. It works well as a base bead color for surface decoration, and it can be pulled into stringer for fine linework, dot patterns, and layered detailing. Because it is rod rather than tubing, it is easy to build volume quickly, then shape and refine with marvers, paddles, and hand tools while the glass is still workable.
How it is used:
- Preheat the rod tip in the outer flame to reduce thermal shock, then bring it to a working glow.
- Wind molten glass onto a prepared mandrel to form beads, or apply it to a hot base bead for stripes and spot color.
- Pull stringer from a heated gather for fine lines, dots, and detail work.
- Shape with a marver or paddle to true up rounds, barrels, and tabs while the glass is still hot.
- Anneal finished work in a kiln using an appropriate schedule for soft glass.
