Description:
This is a transparent Effetre glass rod in the Gray Steel Dark color, manufactured in the classic Moretti style soft glass used for beadmaking and general lampworking. It is pulled into straight rod form so you can heat the end in a torch flame, gather controlled amounts of glass, and apply it precisely to a mandrel or to other hot glass. The dark steel gray tone is useful when you want a neutral transparent that can deepen other colors, create shadow and contrast, or produce a clean smoky gray look without going fully opaque.
How it is used:
- Preheat the rod gradually at the far end of the flame to reduce thermal shock, then bring the working end up to a smooth molten gather.
- Wind the molten glass onto a prepared mandrel to build transparent gray base beads, or use it as a casing layer over opaque colors to mute and deepen them.
- Pull stringer from a small gather for fine linework, scrollwork, and controlled shading details on beads and small soft-glass components.
- Use small gathers to add transparent depth in sculptural bead elements where you want form definition without an opaque block of color.
