Origin Jade Green Bars are pre-cast bars of colored glass formulated for glassworking. Bar stock is made by melting and casting color into thick rectangular pieces, then annealing so it can be cleanly warmed and worked at the torch. In lampworking, color bars are commonly used when you want to pull your own custom rod and stringer, create color overlays, or cut small chunks for use as frit substitutes and surface applications. Bars are especially useful for artists who like to control the diameter and stiffness of the rod they are working with, or who want to produce a lot of matching stringer from a single color batch.
How it is used:
- Preheat the bar in the far flame to reduce thermal shock, then bring one end up to a workable gather.
- Pull custom rod by gathering a small mass and drawing it out to the diameter you want for your torch and project style.
- Pull stringer for fine linework, veining, and detail by drawing a thinner pull from a hot gather.
- Use small warmed fragments as color chunks for spot application, dot work, or for rolling onto a tacky surface when you want a more organic, broken color effect.
- For consistent results, keep your pulls evenly heated and anneal finished work on an appropriate schedule for the glass you are using.
