Origin Lobster Frit (L) is crushed colored glass frit in a large particle size. It is produced by breaking compatible colored glass into coarse granules, then screening it so the pieces fall into a consistent large grade. Large frit is chosen when you want bold, visible color movement and a more textured surface effect than you get from fine frit. In lampworking, it is commonly used for quickly adding color to the surface of beads, small vessels, pendants, and sculptural components, especially when you want variegation, speckling, or a mottled look that reads clearly after melting in.
How it is used:
- Preheat the frit if needed so it stays dry and flows freely in the jar.
- Warm the glass piece until the surface is tacky, then roll or dab it into the frit to pick up an even layer.
- Melt the frit in slowly with a gentle flame to avoid trapping air and to keep the application from shifting.
- Use a clear layer over the top when you want depth, smoother feel, or to protect the frit pattern from distortion during shaping.
- Combine with other frit sizes or stringer work when you want more complex surface patterning and controlled transitions.
