Origin Mustard Frit (L) is a large-grade crushed glass color frit used in lampworking to add bold, organic color breaks and a more textured, variegated surface. Frit is produced by melting compatible colored glass, quenching it, and then crushing and screening it into specific particle sizes. The large particle size is selected when you want more pronounced speckling, heavier color placement, and reactive-looking movement in the melt pattern compared with small frit. It is commonly used for rolling hot glass, spot-applying individual grains for controlled bursts of color, or layering under clear to create depth and visual complexity.
How it is used:
- Preheat the frit lightly to remove moisture and reduce thermal shock.
- Heat the glass surface until it is tacky, then roll the hot area through the frit or press frit onto the surface in a controlled zone.
- Melt in slowly with a neutral flame to avoid boiling the surface and to keep the color placement intentional.
- For heavy applications, “seal” the grains first with a quick surface heat, then fully melt smooth or leave slightly textured depending on the finish you want.
- Use under encasement to create depth, or combine with smaller frit to fill gaps and soften transitions.
