In lampworking, glow bars are used when you want the glow effect in a more concentrated, controllable form than frit, allowing you to pull your own stringer, make small gathers for dots and overlays, or build a glow core that can be shaped and then protected under a clear layer for durability and depth.
How it is used:
- Warm the bar gradually in the back of the flame to reduce thermal shock, then bring a working area up to an even glow.
- Pull stringer from a small gather to create fine glow lines, scrollwork, and detail accents.
- Use small gathers for dots, raised decoration, or spot overlays on beads and pendants.
- For a protected glow effect, apply the glow glass as a base or accent layer and then encase with clear to seal the surface and add optical depth.
- For simple glow cores, build the center form with the glow bar and then add a clear or transparent color sleeve over it before final shaping.
