Description:
The Covington three head sphere machine is a motor-driven grinding and shaping unit built to produce true spheres by working a rough blank against three independently spring-loaded cutting heads. It is constructed with a constant-feed water supply and a mounted grit dispenser so the sphere can run continuously while receiving a fresh slurry of water and abrasive. Each of the three heads works independently and is adjusted with large spin handles, allowing you to dial in even pressure and alignment as the sphere rounds out. This machine is used when you need repeatable, accurate spherical forms for coldworking applications such as display spheres, paperweights, and decorative glass or stone pieces that will later be polished. The unit comes complete with one grit catch pan, instructions, a product guarantee, and your choice of one set of three cutter cups, with cup size specified at ordering. It is capable of making spheres ranging from 2-1/2 inches to 10 inches in size.
How it is used:
- Start with a preformed blank that is slightly oversized, then mount it so the three cutter heads contact evenly and begin rounding the piece as the machine rotates.
- Run water continuously to carry away swarf and keep the abrasive cutting efficiently, then feed grit through the dispenser to maintain a consistent grinding action.
- Adjust the three spring-loaded heads with the spin handles as the sphere becomes more true, keeping pressure balanced so the sphere stays centered and round.
- Step through finer abrasive grits after the sphere is fully shaped, then move to polishing steps on appropriate equipment to bring the surface to a finished gloss.
