Description:

A 2 inch riser shim made to be used with Covington two-station open arbor systems to raise the arbor assembly higher on the base. The shim is a rigid spacer that installs between the arbor and its mounting surface, lifting the unit 2 inches to create the clearance needed for larger diameter wheels. In practical shop use, this is the kind of small hardware part that solves a big fit problem: when you want to run 10 inch wheels on an open arbor, you need additional room so the wheel does not interfere with the base or splash pan area. Lampworkers and glass artists use open arbor grinding setups for shaping and finishing annealed work such as beads, small components, and coldworked details, and this riser shim is used specifically when upgrading the wheel size for faster stock removal or broader contact area during grinding and polishing.

How it is used:

  • Confirm your open arbor model is compatible and disassemble the arbor from its mounting position.
  • Place the 2 inch riser shim in the mounting stack so it raises the arbor evenly and stays fully supported.
  • Reinstall and tighten the mounting hardware so the arbor sits square and does not rock.
  • Test fit the 10 inch wheel to confirm clearance before powering on.
  • Run the system briefly and check for vibration, then proceed with normal grinding and polishing workflow using appropriate water control.
