Nichrome Fusing Wire (18G)

Description:

Nichrome fusing wire in an 18 gauge thickness is a high-temperature alloy wire used for stronger tie-downs and supports in kilnforming. Because nichrome maintains strength and resists oxidation at fusing and slumping temperatures, it’s commonly used to secure glass components to kiln shelves, posts, molds, and armatures while the glass heats, softens, and moves.

Compared to thinner gauges, 18 gauge is stiffer and more supportive, making it a solid choice when you need a tie that will stay tight, resist distortion, and hold heavier or more stubborn setups through the full firing cycle.

How it is used:

  • Twist or wrap the wire to hold glass pieces in position during tack fusing, full fusing, or slumping
  • Create strong tie-downs to reduce shifting once glass begins to soften
  • Form rigid supports or hang points where extra stiffness is helpful
  • Shape and tighten with hand tools like pliers and cutters for secure, repeatable setups
