Description:
The Osibin Graphite Shaping Tool is a hand-held graphite forming tool constructed with a machined graphite head and an industrial strength handle. The working face is made with a half oval shaped concave divot that begins as a slight curve and grows deeper as it widens, allowing you to support and shape hot glass across a range of diameters. This tool is used in lampworking for structural shaping where controlled support is needed while the glass is still hot and plastic. It is especially useful for building and refining forms such as glass animal bodies and bugs, where you want to establish smooth contours, consistent curves, and clean transitions without leaving tool marks that are common with metal tools.
How it is used:
- Warm the graphite head in the flame before use to reduce thermal shock and help prevent chill marks on the glass
- Use the shallow end of the concave divot to support and refine smaller gathers and tighter curves during sculptural work
- Move to the deeper, wider portion of the divot as the form grows to maintain smooth, even contouring on larger sections
- Use gentle rolling and lifting motions to shape the glass while keeping the piece rotating for symmetry
- Reheat frequently and work the glass while it is soft to avoid cracking or distortion from pressing too cold
- Use it to support and round out sculptural bodies and segments before adding legs, wings, antennae, or other attachments
- Flame polish after shaping to remove any minor surface texture before annealing
Dimensions:
- 1" at widest part of concave
- 1/8" at narrowest end
- Handle approximately 6" long
