Moretti Gray Steel Light is a transparent gray soft glass rod from Effetre, produced as solid cane for beadmaking and soft glass flameworking. This is a light, cool-toned transparent gray that is used when you want shading, depth, and a smoky neutral without fully blocking light. In lampworking it is especially useful for creating clean, modern neutrals, soft shadow effects, and layered transparent work where you want other colors to show through with a toned-down, steel-like cast.
As rod stock, it is meant to be worked directly in the torch for winding, shaping, and building small gathers, and it can also be pulled into stringer for fine linework. Transparent gray is a strong choice for encasing over metallic foils, muting bright colors, creating dimensional striping, and adding subtle contrast in sculptural details.
How it is used:
- Pre-warm the rod in the outer flame to reduce thermal shock, then bring it up to a smooth working heat
- Wind onto a mandrel to make transparent bead bases with a cool, smoky tone
- Layer over lighter colors to create shaded effects while keeping depth and transparency
- Pull into stringer for fine outlines, striping, and detail work that reads as soft shadow
- Use for encasing and overlays when you want to tone down high-saturation colors without turning them opaque
