The 7/8" Small Vessel Mandrel is a solid, stainless steel forming tool used in lampworking to shape the inside diameter of small hollow vessels. It provides a rigid, heat-tolerant core that lets you build a clean, consistent opening while you blow or sculpt the body of the piece.
This style of mandrel is especially useful when you want repeatable vessel sizes, a stable opening for later coldworking, or a controlled neck that won’t distort while you’re adding heat and volume.
How it is used:
- Warm the mandrel slightly so it is not ice-cold against hot glass
- Form a gather and create an opening sized to the mandrel
- Insert the mandrel to establish and maintain the interior diameter at the mouth
- Shape and refine the neck and shoulder while keeping the opening round and consistent
- Remove the mandrel once the opening is stable and continue blowing or finishing the vessel as needed
