Construction

This plate is machined from top grade graphite into a flat, smooth working surface. Graphite is a preferred forming material because it tolerates heat well and provides a consistent surface for hot glass contact.

Why and when it’s used in lampworking

A graphite plate is used at the torch as a marvering and shaping surface. Use it when you need to true up a gather, smooth and refine a form, create flat spots, or control symmetry while the glass is still hot and movable.

Graphite is especially useful for shaping because it is less likely to thermally shock hot glass than metal surfaces.
