By applying a diamond topper to a master backing plate, you get an all around adept and competent replacement surface for tired and worn discs. Toppers are prepared with the same high quality as the diamond discs and are readied with a pressure-sensitive adhesive backing so the topper can be pressed down evenly for full contact and stable tracking during use.
Why and when it is used in lampworking
In lampworking, this topper is used for coldworking after annealing when you need to restore a consistent grinding surface without replacing the master backing plate. The 80 grit diamond surface is a coarse stage used when fast material removal is required, such as flattening a base, truing a surface, knocking down sharp edges, and correcting uneven areas before moving to finer grits for scratch refinement and polish.
