Description:
This is a top grade graphite plate made as a flat working surface for glassworking. A plate in this thickness is rigid, stable on the bench, and provides a heat-tolerant surface that hot glass will not readily stick to. Graphite is favored for marvering and shaping because it allows you to control and refine form while keeping the glass surface clean and minimizing unwanted chill marks compared to steel.
How it is used:
In lampworking and scientific glassblowing, a graphite plate is used as a marvering and shaping surface for flattening and truing gathers, rolling sections to even out heat, and refining edges and planes on hot work. It is especially useful when you want a smooth, consistent contact surface for shaping without contaminating the glass. In hot shop support work, a graphite plate can serve as a small marvering station for detail shaping and quick touch-ups when you need a compact, reliable surface at the bench.
