Description:
Asian 12mm Transparent Black Rod is a mid-sized color rod formulated to read as a deep black while still remaining transparent when used with controlled wall thickness. It is supplied as solid rod stock in a 12mm diameter, giving you enough mass for efficient gathers and strong color laydown without jumping all the way to oversized “fatboy” handling. This type of transparent black is chosen when you want dramatic depth, shadow, and contrast that can still transmit light at the edges or in backlit areas, making it especially useful for layered work and clean, high-end finishes.
How it is used:
Use this rod the same way you would any solid color rod in borosilicate lampworking: introduce it gradually to the flame, establish an even heat base, then gather and apply it for wraps, overlays, encasement layers, and sculptural build-up. The 12mm diameter is a sweet spot for medium-to-large work where you want fewer reloads than small rod, but still want good control for clean application lines and even wall thickness. It is particularly effective for bold striping, deep transparent overlays, and creating dimensional dark areas that reveal transparency when thinned or backlit.
