Asian-made clear borosilicate tubing, machine-drawn for consistent outside diameter and wall thickness. Clear tubing is a foundational stock for lampworking because it gives you a ready-made hollow form with a predictable wall, making it faster and more uniform than building hollows from solid rod. A 40mm diameter with a 5.0mm wall is typically chosen when you want a larger starting volume with enough glass mass to handle bigger heat cycles, heavier shaping, and deeper gathers without the piece becoming thin too quickly.
This tubing is used as a hollow blank for lampworking. Common practice is to cut to length, fire-polish the ends, and then either seal one end to form a bubble or attach a handle or blow tube for controlled heating and inflation. The thicker wall supports larger hollow bodies such as vessels, jars, and sculptural forms, and it is also useful when you plan to do significant neck-down work, heavy re-shaping, or multiple joins where you want the tube to stay stable. Clear tubing is also frequently used as an outer sleeve over compatible color work to create depth and protection, or as a base for fuming and surface decoration where clarity and light transmission are part of the finished look.
Cases ship individually in a 65" box. We do not cut anything over 38mm for the safety of our team members.
