Description:
Brown aluminum oxide is a synthetic abrasive blast media used for controlled surface finishing and preparation across lampworking, hot shop glass, and kilnformed glass workflows. It is manufactured from fused aluminum oxide and graded to a consistent 120 grit, giving it a slightly finer cutting action than 100 grit while still removing surface scale, devitrification, and minor imperfections efficiently. Brown aluminum oxide is harder than most dry abrasive blast media, allowing it to cut even very hard materials, and it can be reused many times which makes it a cost-effective choice for shops that sandblast regularly. In glass work, 120 grit is commonly selected when you want a more refined, even matte finish and better control on detail work, such as frosting blown components, preparing surfaces for coldworking steps, and creating consistent tooth for enamel, paint, or adhesive-backed applications.
How it is used:
Brown aluminum oxide is used in a sandblasting cabinet or pressure pot system. Load the abrasive into the blaster according to your equipment requirements, then set air pressure based on the thickness of the glass and the finish you want to achieve. Use steady, overlapping passes and keep a consistent nozzle distance to avoid uneven texture. For thinner blown work and delicate lampworked pieces, reduce pressure and keep the nozzle moving to prevent localized stress. Because this media can be reused, sift and reclaim it as needed to remove glass fines and keep the cutting action consistent.
