Brown Aluminum Oxide (24)

Description:

Brown aluminum oxide is a synthetic abrasive blast media made from fused aluminum oxide and graded to a coarse 24 grit for aggressive cutting and fast material removal. It is harder than most dry abrasive blast media, enabling it to cut even the hardest metals and withstand repeated reuse in a blasting system. In glass work, 24 grit is chosen when you need heavy texture and rapid surface profiling, such as deep frosting, fast removal of stubborn surface contamination, knocking down sharp edges on thicker work before finer finishing steps, and creating a bold, toothy surface for strong visual diffusion. This grit is best reserved for thicker, more robust pieces or for early-stage surface preparation before stepping down to finer grits for a smoother, more controlled finish.

How it is used:

Brown aluminum oxide is used in a sandblasting cabinet or pressure pot blaster. Load the media into your system, then set air pressure appropriate to the thickness and strength of the glass. Use consistent nozzle distance and keep the nozzle moving to avoid concentrating the blast in one spot, which can create deep pits or stress points. For lampworked components, use extra care around thin sections, seals, and sharp transitions. Reclaim and sift the media as needed to remove glass dust and maintain cutting performance, since this abrasive can be reused many times.
