Item Name:

Brown Aluminum Oxide (54)

Description:

Brown aluminum oxide is a synthetic abrasive blast media made from fused aluminum oxide and graded to a coarse 54 grit. It is harder than most dry abrasive blast media, enabling it to cut even the hardest metals, and it can be re-used many times. In lampworking and other glasswork, a 54 grit abrasive is used when you want aggressive cutting and fast surface removal. This grit is commonly chosen for heavy frosting, bold texture, rapid surface profiling, and for stripping stubborn surface contamination before moving to finer media for refinement. It is a practical choice when you need speed and bite on thicker work or on pieces where a pronounced matte texture is desired.

How it is used:

This media is used in a sandblasting cabinet or a pressure pot blaster. Load the media into the blaster, then adjust air pressure and nozzle distance for the thickness of the glass and the depth of cut you want. Use steady, overlapping passes and keep the nozzle moving to avoid gouging one area. For lampworked components, be cautious around thin edges, seals, and sharp transitions, since coarse media removes material quickly and can leave a deeper texture. Reclaim and sift the media as needed to remove glass dust so cutting performance stays consistent, since the media can be reused many times.
