Description:

Brown aluminum oxide is a synthetic abrasive blast media made from fused aluminum oxide and graded to a coarse 80 grit. It is harder than most dry abrasive blast media, enabling it to cut even the hardest metals, and it can be re-used many times. In lampworking and other glasswork, 80 grit is used when you want strong cutting action and a noticeable matte texture, but with more control and a cleaner surface than very coarse grits. This is a common choice for general-purpose frosting, surface prep before applying decals or coldworking steps, and for knocking down minor surface contamination or handling marks before moving to finer media for a smoother finish.

How it is used:

This media is used in a sandblasting cabinet or a pressure pot blaster. Load the media into the blaster, then adjust air pressure and nozzle distance to match the thickness of the glass and the depth of texture you want. Keep the nozzle moving in steady, overlapping passes to prevent striping and uneven cut. On thinner lampworked parts, reduce pressure and avoid lingering on edges and tight radii, since coarse media can undercut quickly and leave a deeper profile than intended. Reclaim and sift the media as needed to remove glass dust so performance stays consistent, since the media can be reused many times.
