Description:
A burnisher is a hand tool with a smooth, hard working tip designed to press and polish soft metal foils and delicate surfaces without tearing them. In glass studios it is most commonly used in stained glass work to firmly seat copper foil onto the glass edge and to smooth the foil face down tight, especially around inside curves, tight radii, and points where fingers cannot apply even pressure. A properly burnished foil wrap improves adhesion, reduces lifted edges, and helps create cleaner solder lines. This tool is also useful anywhere you need controlled pressure to smooth and tighten foil before soldering, or to press down small areas that want to spring back.
How it is used:
After applying copper foil to clean, dry glass, use the burnisher to press the foil evenly onto the glass edge first, then burnish the foil faces on both sides of the glass. Work from the center outward in overlapping strokes so you do not trap wrinkles. Use lighter pressure on thin glass and sharper corners to avoid stretching the foil too much. Pay special attention to inside curves and points, since those areas are most likely to lift during fluxing and soldering. Once the foil is fully seated and smooth, proceed with flux and soldering for stronger, cleaner seams.
