Description:
This is a graphite forming tool made with multiple precision-machined tunnel cavities for shaping glass into consistent hollow ear gauge forms. The tool is constructed from dense, heat-resistant graphite that allows hot glass to be pressed, rolled, and trued without sticking. Each cavity is cut to a specific diameter and depth so you can repeat the same tunnel profile from piece to piece. In lampworking, this style of graphite shaper is used while the glass is still hot and workable to establish the outside diameter and the hollow center opening that defines a tunnel gauge. It is especially useful when you want matched pairs and clean, symmetrical geometry before final flame polishing and annealing.
How it is used:
- Heat a gather of glass and begin forming a short cylinder or barrel shape in the flame
- Introduce the hot glass into the selected cavity and rotate gently to true the outside diameter
- Use a graphite reamer, mandrel, or tungsten pick to establish and maintain the center opening while the glass is still hot
- Return to the flame as needed to keep the glass workable, then re-seat in the cavity to correct symmetry and roundness
- Finish by flame polishing the surface and anneal fully before any wearable use
