This type of rod is selected when you want consistent, repeatable graphic striping built into the glass, rather than creating linework by layering multiple colors yourself. In soft glass lampworking and beadmaking, filigrana rods are commonly used for bold twist effects, cane-like striping, and decorative trails where the internal core line can be stretched, spiraled, and revealed to add motion and crisp pattern definition to beads and small components.
How it is used:
- Warm the rod slowly in the far flame to reduce thermal shock, then bring it up to a workable glow.
- Wind it as a base bead color to carry the internal line through the bead body for built-in striping.
- Twist the rod while heating and pulling a gather to create spiral striping for wraps, decorative cane, or pulled stringer.
- Trail thin lines onto a base bead and melt in gently to keep the linework crisp and high contrast.
