Moretti Blue Sky Filigrana rod is a soft glass cane made by bundling multiple thin strands of colored and clear glass, heating them together, and pulling the bundle into a single rod so the internal line pattern runs the full length of the cane. The Blue Sky colorway gives you a light, airy blue filigrana pattern that stays consistent as you work down the rod. Filigrana is chosen when you want built-in linear detail without having to hand-pull your own twisties or stringer bundles, and it is commonly used for decorative line work, overlays, and pattern reveals in beadmaking and other soft-glass lampworking.
How it is used:
- Warm the rod gradually in the back of the flame to avoid shocking, then bring it up to a smooth working heat.
- Use it as a base material for beads when you want the filigrana lines to show through the surface.
- Apply it as a decorative layer over a compatible soft-glass core, then shape and marver to control how the line pattern stretches and flows.
- Pull it down into stringer for finer linework, or twist it while hot to create spiral pattern variations before applying to your work.
- Encasing with compatible clear can add depth and magnify the filigrana lines, especially on rounded forms like beads and small sculptural details.
