Origin Black Frit (L) is crushed color glass in a large frit grade. Frit is produced by melting compatible glass, cooling it, then crushing and sizing it into consistent particle ranges. Large frit is used in lampworking when you want bold, readable texture and strong color placement without the fine, powdery coverage of smaller grades. Black frit is commonly used for high-contrast striping, speckling, and surface patterning, and it can also be used as a base layer under transparent colors to deepen the final appearance.
How it is used:
- Roll a warm gather or bead across the frit to pick up particles, then melt in lightly to keep texture or fully to smooth the surface.
- Use frit as a spot-applied accent by heating a small area and touching it into the frit for controlled placement.
- Layer black frit under transparent colors to add depth and increase contrast in the finished piece.
- Apply frit to blown components, then melt in and shape to create mottled, organic surface effects.
