Origin Elephant Grey Frit (L) is a large-grade glass frit blend used to add bold, textured color and strong visual contrast to flameworked and kiln-formed glass. It is made by crushing compatible color glass and screening it into a large frit size, leaving larger granules that hold their shape longer during heating and create more pronounced surface character than fine or small frit.
Large frit is chosen when you want a heavier, more graphic application, visible speckling, and layered depth that stays distinct as you melt it in. It is commonly used for beads, pendants, marbles, and small sculptural work where you want a grey tone that can be applied in controlled patches, rolled on for coverage, or used as a base texture before encasing.
How it is used:
- Heat the glass surface, then roll the hot piece through the frit in a tray for heavier pickup
- Spot-apply individual grains with tweezers for controlled placement and patterning
- Melt in partially to preserve a more textured, organic look, or melt in fully for smoother coverage
- Encase under clear to lock in the speckled effect and add depth
- For kiln work, place frit into molds or recesses to create mottled grey patterning and textured fills
