Origin Sunshine Frit (S) is a small-grade crushed glass color frit used in lampworking to add bright, granular color and surface texture. Frit is made by melting compatible colored glass, quenching it, and mechanically crushing and screening it into consistent particle sizes. The small particle size is chosen when you want more even coverage, tighter detail, and smoother melt-in compared to medium or large frit. It is commonly used for rolling hot glass, packing into small cavities, or layering under clear for depth and saturation.
How it is used:
- Preheat the frit lightly to drive off moisture and reduce thermal shock.
- Warm the end of a rod, tube, or gather until it is tacky, then roll or dab the hot glass into the frit.
- Melt the frit in gently with a neutral flame, rotating constantly to keep the application even.
- For cleaner results, briefly “flash” the surface to seal the grains, then fully melt smooth.
- Use as a base layer for encasement, or combine with other frit sizes for gradients and organic transitions.
