Description:
The Osibin Graphite Lentil Mold is a graphite shaping tool constructed from machined graphite with a lentil-shaped forming cavity. The graphite body is designed to withstand repeated direct flame contact while providing a smooth, heat-resistant surface that glass does not readily stick to when properly heated and used. This tool is used in lampworking and beadmaking to help form consistent lentil bead shapes by supporting and compressing hot glass into a controlled profile. It is especially useful when you want repeatable bead geometry, clean edges, and a uniform lentil silhouette without relying entirely on hand shaping.
How it is used:
- Heat the bead evenly in the flame until the surface is soft and the shape is close to round and symmetrical
- Warm the graphite mold in the flame to reduce thermal shock and help prevent chill marks on the glass
- Press and roll the hot bead gently into the lentil cavity to establish the lentil profile and define the edges
- Reheat as needed between presses to keep the glass moving smoothly and avoid cracking from working it too cold
- Use light, repeated presses rather than one hard press to maintain symmetry and reduce distortion at the mandrel line
- Finish by flame polishing and then anneal the bead according to the glass manufacturer schedule
