Running pliers are a hand tool used to break scored sheet glass cleanly and predictably. They are constructed with a pivoting plier body and a shaped jaw system that applies even pressure across the score line. This controlled pressure helps start and guide the run of the crack so the glass separates where you intended, instead of wandering or chipping. In a glass studio, they are commonly used for stained glass work, kilnforming prep, and any situation where you need to cut sheet glass into accurate blanks before grinding, fusing, or assembly.
After scoring the glass with a glass cutter, position the jaws so the center mark of the running pliers aligns directly over the score. Gently squeeze the handles to apply steady pressure. The glass will begin to run along the score and separate into two pieces. Use light, controlled pressure rather than forcing the break to reduce edge chipping and improve accuracy.
