Description:
The Small Disc is a precision-formed graphite cavity tool used to shape small, consistent glass forms. It features multiple disc-shaped cavities machined into the graphite, allowing you to gather a small amount of molten glass and quickly press or form it into repeatable sizes. This style of tool is commonly used in lampworking when you want uniform small components, such as button-like gathers, small seals, or consistent starting shapes for small sculptural elements. Graphite is used because it tolerates torch heat well and releases hot glass cleanly when the tool is properly pre-warmed.
How it is used:
- Pre-warm the graphite near the edge of your flame to drive off moisture and reduce thermal shock.
- Heat a small gather of glass on the end of a rod or punty.
- Briefly press or settle the gather into the selected cavity to establish a consistent disc shape.
- Reheat and refine in the flame, repeating as needed to maintain symmetry and size consistency.
- Use the different cavity sizes to quickly step up or step down your formed disc size during production work.
