Description:
The Small Ribbed Barrel is a beadmaking press shape designed to form a compact barrel bead with evenly spaced ribs around the outside. This style of barrel is commonly used when you want a bead that has extra surface texture for visual interest and for better grip when worn in jewelry. The cavity options listed for this shape allow you to choose both the bead diameter and the bead length so you can match the finished bead to your design and mandrel size.
How it is used:
- Apply bead release to your mandrel and let it dry fully.
- Wind a gather of molten glass onto the mandrel until you have enough volume to fill the chosen cavity size.
- Let the glass cool slightly until it is firm enough to press without smearing.
- Place the bead into the press cavity and close the press smoothly to form the ribbed barrel shape.
- Reheat in the flame to smooth chill marks and refine the edges while keeping the rib detail.
- Anneal the finished bead using an appropriate kiln schedule for your glass type.
