The cavity shape helps you build a symmetrical bicone profile quickly while keeping the bead compact and balanced on the mandrel. This style is especially useful in lampworking when you want repeatable focal beads, spacer sets, or production runs where matching size and shape matter. The ribbing adds texture while you shape, reducing the amount of hand-tooling needed to get a clean, uniform finish.
How it is used:
- Apply bead release to a mandrel and preheat it as you normally would for beadmaking.
- Wind molten glass onto the mandrel to slightly larger than the target cavity size.
- Heat the bead evenly until it is soft and responsive without slumping.
- Place the mandrel into the selected cavity and roll smoothly to form the stubby bicone profile and rib texture.
- Reheat lightly and repeat rolling as needed until the bead is even, centered, and symmetrical.
- Fire-polish to soften any sharp edges, then anneal according to your glass type.
