TAG Double Mai Tai Rod - Firsts
A bold, strike-happy amber/purple that blooms into pinks and purples—Double Mai Tai brings reliable color development in the flame, with extra payoff after a kiln cycle.
Overview
TAG Double Mai Tai is a borosilicate color rod from Trautman Art Glass (TAG) in the amber/purple family, known for developing a lively mix of pinks and purples with less of the heavy amber base you’ll see in some similar striking colors.
It strikes well in the flame and can continue to gain color with kiln heat, making it a strong choice when you want dependable color development without having to fight the glass to get it to “wake up.”
Why this color
Double Mai Tai is all about that sweet-spot palette: warm undertones with a brighter, more saturated pop of pink/purple that reads rich and dimensional once it’s worked and brought to strike.
If you like colors that reward good heat control, this one gives you plenty of range—subtle when kept cleaner, and more dramatic when you push the strike and let the kiln do a little extra work.
Best uses
- Striking accents, bands, and wraps where you want the color to “bloom” as the piece cools
- Layering over dark bases for depth and contrast
- Blown or sculpted details where consistent strike behavior matters
- Kiln-struck work when you want additional color development after torchwork
