Overview

TAG Mai Tai is a borosilicate striking color rod from Trautman Art Glass (TAG) that’s famous for being subtle in the flame and then transforming dramatically after torchwork and kiln heat.

In the flame it tends to show a light amber/yellow strike, but the real payoff happens in the kiln, where it can develop richer pink-to-purple tones and that “cosmic” look Mai Tai is known for.

Why this color

Mai Tai is a go-to when you want a color that rewards process and patience. It’s designed to look understated while you’re working, then reveal its personality after annealing and heatwork.

That delayed color development makes it especially appealing for artists who like kiln-struck palettes and want a dependable way to add depth and mood without relying on surface effects.

Best uses

  • Kiln-struck work where the final color is meant to develop after torchwork
  • Encased details and layered color builds for depth
  • Accent bands, wraps, and linework that benefit from post-kiln transformation
  • Pieces where you want a soft in-flame look that finishes with richer color after annealing
