Description:
The Trim Saw Vise is a metal, screw-driven clamping vise made to mount and run on compatible Covington trim saw setups. It is built to hold small rough, slab fragments, and irregular lapidary pieces securely so they can be trimmed with better control and repeatability than freehand cutting. In a glass studio, this style of vise is also useful anywhere you need a stable, non-handheld way to secure small hard materials for wet cutting and shaping operations, such as cutting kiln shelf posts, trimming refractory or ceramic components, or preparing small stone and mineral inclusions used in coldworking and mixed-media work. The vise opens up to 1-5/8 inch and is designed to firmly grip rock.
How it is used:
- Mount the vise on the compatible trim saw table or feed assembly and confirm it is aligned square to the blade path.
- Open the jaws and seat the material so the intended cut line is supported and will not twist during the cut.
- Tighten the screw handle until the piece is firmly clamped, then re-check that the blade will clear the jaws and hardware.
- Use light, steady feed pressure and let the blade do the work, especially on brittle materials that can chip if forced.
- After the cut, back the material away from the blade before loosening the jaws, then remove and rinse the vise to reduce slurry buildup.
